Sword From The Stone (Acoustic Version) - Passenger
Hello everyone, and welcome to this new guitar tutorial featuring a beautiful song by Passenger: Sword from the Stone. In this video, I’m covering the version Mike plays in a performance that’s available only on YouTube—I've linked it here for you to check out.
I chose this specific rendition instead of the acoustic version available on Spotify for a couple of reasons. First, the Spotify version features two guitars, which makes things a bit more complicated to reproduce. But more importantly, the YouTube version includes a guitar solo—a unique and exciting addition that’s a first for this channel.
So, let’s get into the playing. The left hand is fairly straightforward, with the exception of the solo (which I won’t go into here—I might dedicate a separate tutorial to that). The song is built around five basic chords, making it accessible even if you're not an advanced player. I’ve tried to stay as faithful as possible to the way Passenger plays it in the video—for example, using the middle finger on the third fret of the low E string. But if you prefer using the ring finger (a more traditional approach, though possibly less comfortable given how narrow the higher frets are), feel free to go with whatever works best for you.
As for the right hand, the picking pattern is quite consistent: the thumb generally takes care of the three lowest strings, the index finger handles the third string, the middle finger the second, and the ring finger the first string. There’s one exception—during the arpeggio over the D major chord, the thumb covers both the fourth and third strings, while the index and middle fingers play the second and first strings, respectively.
