Vanilla Baby (OurVinyl Sessions) - Billie Marten
Hello everyone, and welcome to this new guitar tutorial! Today we’re diving into the very first tutorial of a Billie Marten song, and not just any song, but her most famous one: Vanilla Baby.
However, this tutorial is a little different from usual, since it doesn’t cover the original studio version. Instead, we’ll be looking at the beautiful acoustic session she recorded with OurVinyl last year, a version I completely fell in love with.
Compared to the studio track, there are two main differences: the tempo (this one is played faster) and the key (the original has the capo on the second fret, while here it’s placed on the third). Fun fact: more often than not, when Billie performs this song live, she plays it in this version rather than the studio one.
That being said, the piece is unfortunately too complex to break down section by section here. What I can suggest, though, is to use your thumb for the sixth and fifth strings, your index finger for the fourth, and your middle finger for the third when playing the verses. In the pre-chorus and chorus, the picking shifts back to a more familiar setting.
