Girl - SYML

Just like with “You and I” I had the pleasure of listening to “Girl” live at SYML’s concert at Paradiso Amsterdam. If you’re not aware, Brian dedicated this song to his young daughter, who suffered from health issues at the tender age of 2, making the song even more moving than it already is.

As for the tutorial content, this time the capo should be placed on the sixth fret. We can divide the song into two parts: the first part, up to measure 19, consists of a classic fingerpicking pattern using the thumb, index, middle, ring, and index fingers. The second part, from measure 20 onwards, features a more dynamic fingerpicking pattern where the ring finger is not needed. Personally, for this second part, I prefer to play the bass notes on the bottom three strings with my thumb, all notes on the second string with my middle finger, and those on the third string with my index finger. You'll also notice that I use my left hand’s middle finger on the fourth string for the E minor chord (instead of the more common ring finger) to allow for a smoother transition to the next chord.

With that said, have fun!
