Those Eyes - Iris Jean

Mehro’s concert in Amsterdam stood out for another reason I haven’t mentioned yet: by pure coincidence, I knew the artist who opened the show, Iris Jean, a Dutch singer-songwriter known for her acoustic cover of Those Eyes by New West (one of my personal favorites from BAGS).

As many of you know, I love creating parallels between my playlists, so naturally, I didn’t hesitate for a second before adding her version to Best Acoustic Covers as soon as I received it.

Since I don’t have a TikTok account, I wasn’t aware that her video had garnered nearly 4 million views, with countless people asking her to release a full version (kind of like the Breezeblocks cover by Taylor Rae, right?). It never ceases to amaze me how powerful social media can be.

As Iris herself pointed out — confirming my own feelings — her version doesn’t stray far from the original in terms of structure and guitar sound. The only real difference is the instrumental part, where the electric guitar truly steals the show, in contrast to the more “empty” section in the original.
